Current research tells us that the number of people who are overweight or obese in the UK is rising.

A study carried out in 2017 by ‘The Health Survey for England’ showed that ‘28.7% of adults in England are obese and a further 35.6% are overweight, making a total of 64.3% who are either overweight or obese.2 Of obese adults, around one in eight are morbidly obese (3.6% of all adults). Men are more likely than women to be overweight or obese (67.2% of men compared with 61.5% of women)’.

With the problem increasing year on year many people have tried numerous diets, slimming pills and exercise programmes to try and get rid of their fat but nothing has worked for them.  For some, having a gastric band fitted seems the only answer.

What is Gastric Band or Lap Band Surgery?

In recent years there has been a steady increase in people who have resorted to having Gastric Band Surgery to help them lose weight.  They feel that they have tried everything possible to lose their unwanted weight but nothing has worked.

Gastric band surgery is an operation that is carried out under general anaesthetic.  During the operation the surgeon places a band around the top part of the patient’s stomach.  This band is then tightened to create a small pouch at the top of the stomach which restricts the amount of food that can be eaten comfortably at each mealtime.

The decision to have a physical gastric band fitted is huge and not one to be taken lightly.  There are risks involved in this type of surgery including blood clots in the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or in the lungs (pulmonary embolism), infections and internal bleeding.  Other unpleasant side effects of having a gastric band fitted can be gastro-oesophageal reflux (GER), nausea and vomiting.

Sometimes people develop intolerance’s to certain foods meaning that they have to eat restricted diets.  It is also possible that the band can slip resulting in the stomach pouch becoming enlarged.  The band has also been reported to work its way through the stomach wall in some cases.  When this happens a further operation is required to remove it or replace it.

Other things to be considered before having Gastric Band surgery are the discomfort associated with surgery, the after effects of the anaesthetic and the time off work to recover.

So How Is a Virtual Gastric Band Different?

Well, first of all there is no physical operation involved so there is no pain or discomfort and absolutely no need to take any time off work while you recover.  There are no side effects or risks involved.
